Come esprimere il possesso in inglese - Part 1

Per indicare possesso o relazione tra persone, viene spesso usata in inglese una costruzione detta genitivo sassone. Per formare il possessivo, si aggiunge un apostrofo + s al nome del possessore.  

The man's car is white.

L'automobile dell'uomo è bianca.

Emma is Mark’s sister.

Emma è la sorella di Mark.

 

Per i nomi propri che terminano in s, è possibile formare il genitivo sassone aggiungendo un apostrofo + s oppure solo un apostrofo: 

Thomas's book/Thomas' book.

Il libro di Thomas.

 

Quando si vuole indicare il luogo dove si svolge una certa attività si omette il nome della cosa posseduta. In generale si tratta di nomi di posti come house (casa), restaurant (ristorante), church (chiesa), ecc. 

 

Did she arrive at her mother’s?

È arrivata a casa di sua madre
 

Last night we went to “Pietro’s”. The food is very good there. 

Ieri sera siamo andati al ristorante di Pietro. Il cibo è molto buono lì.

 

On Sunday morning I generally go to St. Martin’s.

Di solito la domenica mattina vado alla chiesa di San Martino.


Nel video che abbiamo indicato nel primo esempio, Sigrid introduce il concetto di possesso parlando anche di quelli che in italiano chiamiamo "aggettivi possessivi" (possessive adjectives/possessive determiners).  Gli aggettivi possessivi sono sempre seguiti da un sostantivo. In inglese sono invariabili e non sono mai preceduti dall’articolo. Come dice Sigrid, appunto:

I am replacing the article or determiner: a cup, my cup

Sostituisco l'articolo o il determinante: una tazza, la mia tazza

Dunque, anche per formare il plurale dell’esempio precedente, useremo my:

My cups

Le mie tazze


La seconda persona singolare è your e sta per tuo, tua, tuoi, tue.

What's your native language? 

Qual è la tua lingua nativa [madre]?

Attenzione! Your si usa anche per la seconda persona plurale che in italiano corrisponde a vostro, vostra, vostri, vostre, 

In inglese, gli aggettivi possessivi his, her e its (suo, sua, suoi, sue) si comportano in maniera diversa che in italiano. His si riferisce ad un possessore di sesso maschile, her ad uno di sesso femminile ed its si riferisce ad animali, cose o concetti. 

 

He's lying on his pillow.

Lui è disteso sul suo cuscino.

Our (nostro, nostra, nostri, nostre) e their (loro) sono le altre due forme plurali degli aggettivi possessivi.

Our cars are parked there. 

Le nostre automobili sono parcheggiate lì.
